About this character counter
Most places that ask for a word or character limit do not agree on how to measure it. An application form may count every keystroke including spaces, a CMS field may cut off at a number of bytes, and a professor may only care about words. This counter shows all of them side by side so you can check the one that applies to you.
The numbers update while you type, so you can see straight away how much you need to cut or add. Sentences are split on end punctuation and paragraphs on blank lines, which matches how most editors count them.
Nothing is uploaded. The counting happens in your browser with plain JavaScript, so drafts, cover letters and unpublished work stay on your machine. Close the tab and the text is gone.

Does the character count include spaces?
It depends on where you are submitting. Forms and CMS fields usually count spaces, while some style guidelines do not. Both numbers are shown here, so use the one your form asks for.
Is the character counter free?
Yes. There is no account, no login and no payment — the tool runs entirely in your browser.
What is the byte count for?
Some forms and databases limit input by bytes rather than characters. In UTF-8 a plain Latin letter is one byte, while accented, Cyrillic, Arabic or CJK characters take two to four, so a text can hit a byte limit long before it looks long.
