But there's a misunderstanding folded into the phrase. No tool can establish that "this was written by Gemini." It makes sense to start with what you can actually learn.
A detector isn't a tool for guessing the model
What a detector reads is the text's stylistic features. Sentences produced by a generative model tend to move toward an easily predicted next word, hold an even length, and keep their word choices on the safe side. Human writing has uneven rhythm and unexpected phrasing mixed in.
That difference shows up regardless of which model produced the text. So Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude all get picked up similarly — and conversely, none of it is grounds for saying "this one is Gemini".
To put it plainly:

- ✅ Marking which sentences read as especially mechanical → possible

The texture you often see in Gemini text
You can't identify the model, but anyone who has edited a Gemini draft will recognize a certain texture. Not an absolute rule — a tendency.
A pull toward structure first. Even unasked, it often organizes into subheadings and numbered lists. Leave it and the whole piece reads like an outline.
A pull toward elaboration. Where one sentence would do, a follow-up like "in other words, it can be said that…" attaches itself. You end up with stretches where two sentences say the same thing.
Balanced endings. After arguing one way it settles up at the end with "that said, it's also worth considering…". Safe, but the writer's position goes blurry.
Monotone sentence shapes. The same hedged construction repeats paragraph after paragraph, and the ending of each sentence starts to sound like the last.
These are less Gemini's own traits than the shared tendencies of a well-trained assistant model. Which is why they're practical as a list of things to fix, not as grounds for telling models apart.
How to read the result
There are two common reactions to a result, and both are slightly off.
"I got 90%, I'm finished" — no. AI probability is the strength of a stylistic signal rather than a probability. Short texts, bullet-style texts and texts in a fixed form run high by nature.
"20%, so I'm safe" — also no. A low score doesn't guarantee passing anything. Predicting whether something passes was never the point of a detector.
The reading that's actually useful is span by span.
- Glance at the overall score and move on.
- Read only the sentences flagged with high suspicion.
- Check whether your judgment, your experience, a concrete fact sits in those sentences.
- If not, fill it in; if it's there and still flagged, change the sentence length or the phrasing.
At step 3, "it's there and still flagged" is usually a rhythm problem, and "flagged because it's empty" is a content problem. The second is far more important.
The minimum work that makes a draft yours
If you've decided not to use a Gemini draft as-is, three things in priority order already change the impression.
- Rewrite the first paragraph. It's the first thing a reader meets, and the blandest part of an AI draft.
- Delete the elaborations. Find the places saying the same thing twice and cut the second sentence. You lose length and gain density.
- Put one of your own examples in each section. Something you went through yourself, instead of a statistic or a generality. Nothing converts a draft into human writing more reliably.
For sentence-level polish, drafting with a paraphrasing tool and doing the final pass yourself is quick. But don't use even that output as-is — read it once. Awkward substitutions do slip in.

If you're worried about "will they catch that I used Gemini", it's safer to check first whether you can explain that the writing is yours. Most real problems come not from a detection tool but from the question "walk me through this part."
